^garden time 'IVI-* E. Gafdner ^ . Q*. State. College I have received stems of scotch broom which are heavily infested with white peach scale. This in sect also attacks another orna mental, privet, and is sometimes serious on peach trees in the sand hills, if not properly controlled. It is a sucking insect and can be easily identified by its white cottony appearance. The insect can be controlled by using a three per cent dormant oil spray which can be supplied by your local garden supply dealer. Usually two sprays are neces sary and should be applied two weeks apart. Select a period when good weather is predicted because oil should not be used when the temperature is expected to go be low 40 degrees F. • The question about the bearing “every other year” of old apple trees around the home has again been raised. For all practical purposes, this biennial bearing is caused by low tree vitality due to the lack of proper fertilization, and, in many cases, complete lack of fertilization of any kind. Tech nically this condition is related to the carbohydrate-nitrogen balance in the tree. If you will fertilize your trees they should bear every year if the blossoms escape late frost in the spring. For a ten-year-old tree, use five pounds of an 8-8-8 ferti lizer mixture. For a 20-year old tree use twice as much. The fertilizer should be spread Start Stopping s QUICHES, SAFER * at LOWER COST XTRA-MILEAGE RETREADS Applhd to found tiro bodiot or to your own tirot WITH EXCLUSIVE GOODYEAR TREAD DESIGN $9.00 750x14 plus tax charge and your recappable tire. • New, improved compound quality • Same distinctive features as found in new tire tread designs • Applied by factory-approved methods We give Gold Bond Stamps. Many people seem to have the idea that fertilizing and pruning fruit trees is all that is necessary for a good crop of fruit. While these two operations are needed, don’t expect sound fruit unless you are prepared to protect the trees by the use of the proper spray mixtures applied at the right time. The timing of sprays is just as important as using the right materials. A friend called the other day and said, “I am greatly distressed about my muscadine vine. It bore large grapes in abundance for three years but has not borne for the past two years. Will you please stop by on your way to the office and tell me what to do.” Since this plant had borne fruit, we can assume that pollen was available to fertilize the flowers. She had constructed a bed a round the plant, using 2 by 12 inch boards. This bed was about 10 feet square and filled with rich soil and leaf mold. This perhaps was good enough for satisfactory growth and production. However, she told me that whenever she had some commercial fertilizer which had “become lumpy” she would carry it out of the basement and dump it around the plant. “You see there are some lumps of nitrate of soda which I added not long ago.” I noticed that the plant was ex tremely vigorous as indicated by exceptionally heavy cane growth made in the 1960 growing season. It is my opinion that the plant is not producing fruit because of being over-vegetative due to ex cessive applications of fertilizer on a soil which is already good. Some things to do now around the home. Top dress the lawn, us ing about 20 pounds of an 8-8-8 fertilizer, or equivalent, for each thousand square feet of lawn area. You may want to be a little more liberal under laTge trees. Prune the early flowering shrubs after they have shed their flowers. If you have dahlias, examine the clumps in storage and sprinkle them with water if they appear to be too dry. This will induce sprouting before they are divided and planted. Plan to include petunias in your bedding plant schedule. This is a most satisfactory plant and comes in such a variety of colors.
